3D Scanning for Power & Utility Asset Documentation

K K Geosystem helps power and utility project teams document accessible equipment, structures and service routes through 3D scanning and agreed as-built modelling. The resulting geometry supports upgrade planning, space coordination and drawing preparation for existing facilities.

What can utility teams use 3D scan data for?

Use it to understand the physical arrangement of an existing facility before modifying equipment or service routes. Scan-derived models can show the relationship between accessible piping, equipment and structures when the scope defines what must be captured and modelled.

What can the agreed scope deliver?

Project need Activity to scope Potential output
Power-plant upgrades Record equipment arrangements and adjacent structures Agreed point clouds and plant models
Plant service routing Document accessible pipe routes and space constraints Scoped routing-reference drawings
Equipment replacement Capture physical interfaces and maintenance space Selected dimensions and interface geometry
Asset documentation Combine measured geometry with supplied asset references Agreed models and drawing updates

Outputs depend on the commissioned scope. Scanning, modelling, drawing preparation and inspection are agreed separately; a scan-only assignment does not automatically include all of them.

What should be agreed before work begins?

A useful utility model starts with an agreed asset list and purpose. Confirm which equipment, pipes and structural elements need representation, which attributes come from client records, and how uncertain or inaccessible geometry will be flagged. Asset age, operating condition and electrical connectivity should not be inferred simply from the scan appearance.

Information to include in your enquiry

  • Plant area or asset list and approximate extent
  • Required disciplines and model detail
  • Existing drawings, equipment tags and reference coordinates
  • Access restrictions and planned shutdown windows

What are the measurement boundaries?

Surface scanning does not detect concealed underground utilities or establish electrical condition. Energised equipment, restricted areas and operational plants require the asset owner’s access and safety arrangements. Specialist tests and buried-service detection are separate scopes.

Required accuracy, coverage, coordinate reference and acceptance criteria should be defined for the intended use. Any relevant gaps or assumptions should be recorded with the deliverables.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have power-plant project experience?

K K Geosystem has completed numerous power-plant assignments for various customers. Public descriptions omit end-customer names and confidential project details.

Can you locate underground cables with a laser scanner?

A surface laser scan cannot see through the ground. Buried utility detection needs a separately selected method and should not be assumed to be included.

Can our overseas team supply the scans?

Yes. Customer-supplied point clouds can be reviewed for remote modelling and drawing work. Required disciplines, model detail and output formats are agreed first.
