3D Scanning for Castings, Forgings & Machined Parts

Handheld 3D scanning provides surface geometry for reviewing manufactured parts against reference CAD or documenting a component for downstream engineering. K K Geosystem can scope scan-to-CAD comparison, selected feature measurement and CAD reconstruction around the part and its tolerances.

What can a surface scan reveal about a manufactured part?

An agreed comparison can show where captured surfaces differ from the reference. This helps teams examine casting shape, machining allowance or distortion, while specific dimensional characteristics are evaluated using their defined datum and tolerance requirements.

What can the agreed scope deliver?

Project need Activity to scope Potential output
Casting shape review Compare captured geometry with nominal CAD Surface deviation views
Machining allowance study Compare a blank with the intended geometry Agreed stock-distribution analysis
Forging variation Review measured sections and shape Selected section comparisons
Machined feature review Measure suitable accessible features Dimensional results for agreed characteristics

Outputs depend on the commissioned scope. Scanning, modelling, drawing preparation and inspection are agreed separately; a scan-only assignment does not automatically include all of them.

What should be agreed before work begins?

Surface finish, scale, oil, temperature and access affect the measurement plan. Define whether the objective is overall shape, local stock allowance or acceptance of specific features. A best-fit alignment can be useful for shape studies but may conceal functional location errors; use the alignment appropriate to the drawing or engineering question.

Information to include in your enquiry

  • Part dimensions, finish and inspection condition
  • Nominal CAD and drawing tolerances
  • Required alignment and critical features
  • Sample count and intended report use

What are the measurement boundaries?

Surface geometry does not reveal internal porosity, material composition or heat-treatment condition. Scanning is not a substitute for internal-defect testing. Small bores and deep features may require probing or another method.

Required accuracy, coverage, coordinate reference and acceptance criteria should be defined for the intended use. Any relevant gaps or assumptions should be recorded with the deliverables.

Frequently asked questions

Does a colour map provide pass/fail results?

Only against defined limits and the agreed alignment. A colour display without those references should not be treated as acceptance evidence.

Can you inspect internal casting defects?

A surface scan cannot detect internal porosity or hidden defects. This service scope covers external geometry measurement.

Is scanning suitable for every tolerance?

No single method suits every feature and tolerance. The proposed system and verification approach should be reviewed against the actual requirement.
