Handheld 3D scanning can document accessible tool surfaces, compare mould or die geometry with a reference and support CAD reconstruction of existing tooling. K K Geosystem also provides portable CMM jig and fixture verification where locating features and adjustment checks need a separately defined measurement scope.
Relevant technology: Creaform handheld 3D scanning. Explore scanner products or discuss a scanning service below. The measurement system is selected for the part and required outputs.
Measured geometry can help a tooling team investigate surface differences, preserve the shape of a modified tool or review a repaired area. A suitable reference and alignment are needed to distinguish intended changes from manufacturing variation or wear.
| Project need | Activity to scope | Potential output |
|---|---|---|
| Mould and die surface review | Capture accessible working surfaces | Comparison against agreed reference |
| Tool repair documentation | Record selected areas before and after repair | Scoped geometry comparison |
| Legacy tool reconstruction | Digitise an existing tool | CAD reconstruction and drawing scope |
| Fixture verification | Evaluate agreed locating features | Portable CMM verification and remeasurement report |
Outputs depend on the commissioned scope. Scanning, modelling, drawing preparation and inspection are agreed separately; a scan-only assignment does not automatically include all of them.
Define which surfaces control the manufactured part and which features establish the tool coordinate system. Review access to cavities, inserts and undercuts before capture. For fixture work, distinguish surface scanning from the locating-pin, clamp and support checks required by the drawing. Adjustment is guided and remeasured within the commissioned scope.
Scanning does not itself correct a tool or certify its production capability. Wear cannot be quantified reliably without a suitable baseline. Tool manufacture, repair and production trials remain separately scoped activities.
Required accuracy, coverage, coordinate reference and acceptance criteria should be defined for the intended use. Any relevant gaps or assumptions should be recorded with the deliverables.

Accessible geometry can be captured and reconstructed. Agree whether the CAD should represent the measured condition or an intended nominal design.
No. Capture, CAD reconstruction, inspection, design changes and manufacturing are separate activities.
The choice depends on the features and tolerances. Surface scanning and portable CMM probing serve different measurement needs and may be scoped together.
