Rockwell hardness testing for metallic specimens

Metzer Rockwell hardness testers provide several operating formats for routine material inspection. Rockwell testing determines hardness from indentation depth under a defined loading sequence. The correct scale, indenter and specimen support are selected around the material and inspection procedure.

Applications include production quality checks and laboratory hardness evaluation of suitable metallic specimens. Sample thickness, surface condition and support must meet the chosen test method.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about rockwell hardness testers.

How does Rockwell differ from Brinell?

Rockwell uses indentation depth, whereas Brinell uses the measured size of a ball impression. The required material specification or inspection procedure should guide the choice of method.

Which Rockwell scale should I use?

Use the scale specified for the material and application. Scale selection determines the indenter and loading conditions; scales are not interchangeable without an accepted method.

Can curved components be tested?

Some components can be tested with suitable support and method-specific treatment of curvature. Provide the component geometry so the testing arrangement can be assessed.

What should I send for a quotation?

Include material, required Rockwell scale, specimen size and shape, test volume and any data recording requirements.
