Handheld 3D Scanning for Product Development & Prototyping

Handheld 3D scanning connects physical samples and prototypes with digital design workflows. K K Geosystem can capture accessible geometry and prepare agreed mesh or CAD outputs for design development, packaging studies and comparison between a prototype and its reference model.

When should a product team digitise a physical prototype?

Scanning is useful when the physical shape contains information that is missing from the design files, or when a prototype must be compared with CAD. It can preserve a form, record an interface or provide geometry for further reconstruction.

What can the agreed scope deliver?

Project need Activity to scope Potential output
Physical design samples Digitise accessible form and surface detail Processed mesh
CAD development Reconstruct agreed geometry from scans Scoped editable CAD output
Prototype validation Compare the sample with reference geometry Agreed comparison report
Additive-manufacturing preparation Review mesh requirements for a downstream workflow Separately scoped mesh preparation

Outputs depend on the commissioned scope. Scanning, modelling, drawing preparation and inspection are agreed separately; a scan-only assignment does not automatically include all of them.

What should be agreed before work begins?

Choose the output based on the next activity. A mesh records surface shape but is different from an editable parametric CAD model. Define whether the model should follow the physical form closely or represent simplified nominal geometry. Specify units, scale, critical interfaces and the receiving software before delivery.

Information to include in your enquiry

  • Prototype photographs and approximate dimensions
  • Design objective and areas requiring modification
  • Target software and preferred output format
  • Critical interfaces and delivery milestones

What are the measurement boundaries?

A scan does not automatically produce production-ready CAD or a print-ready file. Wall thickness, material selection, print orientation and functional testing require separate decisions. Hidden geometry needs additional information.

Required accuracy, coverage, coordinate reference and acceptance criteria should be defined for the intended use. Any relevant gaps or assumptions should be recorded with the deliverables.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mesh editable like a CAD solid?

Not in the same way. CAD reconstruction is a separate scope when the next workflow needs engineered surfaces, solids or specific editable features.

Can scanning support 3D printing?

It can provide source geometry. Printing suitability and any mesh repair or redesign need to be defined separately.

Can you compare successive prototypes?

Yes, where suitable reference data and an agreed alignment are available. Define the regions and dimensions that matter to the design review.
