3D Scanning for Heavy Engineering & Legacy Spare Parts

K K Geosystem supports the documentation and reverse engineering of existing mechanical components, including large and complex parts. Handheld scanning can provide accessible geometry for CAD reconstruction, interface review and inspection, with the capture method selected for the part’s size and engineering requirements.

How does scanning help when original drawings are unavailable?

A physical component provides a starting point for reconstructing accessible geometry. The engineering team must then distinguish the measured condition from intended design, especially where wear, damage or previous repairs have changed the shape.

What can the agreed scope deliver?

Project need Activity to scope Potential output
Obsolete spare parts Capture a sample for engineering reconstruction Agreed CAD model and drawings
Large components Document accessible surfaces and interfaces Processed scan or mesh data
Maintenance interfaces Review mating and mounting geometry Selected dimensions or comparison
Worn components Compare with available design or baseline information Measured-condition record and stated assumptions

Outputs depend on the commissioned scope. Scanning, modelling, drawing preparation and inspection are agreed separately; a scan-only assignment does not automatically include all of them.

What should be agreed before work begins?

Share the service history and known damage before planning capture. A worn sample should not silently become the manufacturing nominal. Identify critical interfaces, fits, material references and features that require separate measurement. Large components may need a different capture setup or a combined measurement approach.

Information to include in your enquiry

  • Photos, approximate size and ability to move the part
  • Known wear, damage and previous repairs
  • Available drawings and mating-part information
  • Required CAD type, drawings and critical fits

What are the measurement boundaries?

A scan does not establish alloy, heat treatment, load capacity or remaining service life. Reproduction requires engineering decisions beyond external geometry. A scan-derived CAD model is not automatically a manufacturing release.

Required accuracy, coverage, coordinate reference and acceptance criteria should be defined for the intended use. Any relevant gaps or assumptions should be recorded with the deliverables.

Frequently asked questions

Can you work at our factory?

K K Geosystem provides on-site services across India from offices in Ahmedabad and Jamshedpur. Access and handling requirements are reviewed for the part.

Can you model scan data collected overseas?

Yes. Remote Scan-to-CAD and drawing work can be commissioned using customer-supplied data, after a review of coverage and requirements.

Will the new CAD automatically correct wear?

No. The intended nominal geometry and any reconstruction assumptions must be agreed with the engineering team.
